Columbus up and coming duo Bird and Byron's songs "Life is a Bore" and "Alone" feature soulful lyrics laid over upbeat indie guitar riffs.

We loved talking with songwriters Blake Bergere and Nick Lorenz about heading off to record new music in Nashville, their creative process and how they started writing music together. Their music has an interesting blend of soul-influenced indie-rock that is highlighted by Blake's passionate vocals.

Bird and Byron are currently getting ready to head off to Nashville, Tennessee to record with producer Andrija Tokic at The Bomb Shelter studio with support from Joel Lorenz on drums and Jack Lawrence on bass.

Bird and Byron started writing music together in summer of 2019. Although they didn't release their first single until just before the pandemic hit in 2020 the pair are already receiving a lot of attention!

Blake and Nick attended the same high school but didn't start writing songs together until after College. "It feels like it's all happening at the right time" -Nick on how Bird and Byron's music is really starting to come together this year.

Writing Process

"We start by getting a groovy beat down, adding chords and then writing melodies on top. Then Blake will freestyle the lyrics."

Influences:

Blake's writing is highly influenced by Aretha Franklin and Jack Johnson records, who was a childhood family favourite. Nick feels inspired by the new age soul bands coming from New York label Big Crown Records. Blake and Nick share a love of world music which greatly influences the songs they write together.

Writing Their First Record

"We're Writing this album to be played live."

The guys said the songs they're working on right now are about feeling like we're all about to "come out of a storm" and how the worst parts of the pandemic are hopefully almost over. They described one song's lyrics as focusing on looking back on the past year and the surreal mentality that comes with being forced to think about mortality as 24 year olds.

From Turkish funk to Japanese city pop to Brazilian folk music, the duo feel truly inspired by world music and the feel of a song over being able to fully understand its lyrics. The track "Evaporar" by Little Joy and pop/funk band Khruangbin were mentioned as important inspirations for their new music as well.

Blake's influential albums:

"The White Album" - The Beatles

"Lady Soul" - Aretha Franklin

"Brothers" - The Black Keys

Nick's influential albums:

"Tomorrow's Gone" - Charlie Megira
